The defence of the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad is due to be enhanced with the addition of S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name ‘Sa-21 Growler’) medium-to-high altitude surface-to-air missiles.
The news regarding the S-400 deployment, released in mid-February, represents the latest step in Russian plans to roll out this system across its armed forces. Presently, two Russian Air Force regiments are thought to be equipped with the S-400, both of which are located in Moscow; one of which protects the industrial city of Elektrostal, east ofMoscow.
The deployment of the S-400 has been muted as a political response to continuing NATO and United States missile defence efforts under the auspices of the European Phased Adaptive Approach.
