New Factories For New Weapons

Almaz Antei, Russia’s ground-based air defence system specialists, plan to build a new missile factory which will be commissioned in 2015. The new plant will be constructed in the city of Nizhny Novgorod, although there is no word yet on the products that this factory will produce.

Almaz Antei is responsible for a number of Russian air defence systems including the S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name ‘SA-21 Growler’) medium-to-high altitude surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. As reported in April’s edition of ChainHomeHigh, Russia is planning to activate three battalions of S-400 Triumf systems. This is in addition to the three batteries of S-300V4 (NATO reporting name ‘SA-12 Gladiator’) medium-to-high altitude SAM systems which will be deployed to Russia’s Southern Military District.

The decision to build the new Almaz Antei factory may a reflect Russia’s continuing enhancement of its ground-based air defence posture.
