United States – Turning Japanese

Japanese and United States government officials are involved in discussions regarding the deployment of an X-band early warning radar to Japan.

The new system could play an important role in helping to detect any ballistic missile launches by North Korea.

There has been no word from the US Department of Defense regarding the type of radar which could be deployed, or where the radar may be located, although some media reports have mentioned that it could be positioned in southern Japan.

Japan is already home to one US-supplied early warning radar in the form of a Raytheon AN/TPY-2 FBX-T (Forward Based X-Band Radar-Transportable) system, which is deployed in near Tsugaru City, Northern Japan.
